You're my valentine

Nobody knows very much about St. Valentine. One story is that he was murdered by Roman soldiers in the third century A.D. because he was a Christian. He gave a poor girl some money before he died and so other Christians called him the saint of love.
Valentine's Day, or St Valentine's Day, is celebrated every year on 14 February. It's the day when people show their affection for another person (or people!) by sending anonymous cards, flowers or chocolates with messages of love.

And you? Who do you secretly fancy? Is there someone you like but you're too shy to tell them how you feel? Have you got a special friend to whom you would like to send a love message (Valentine)? Write your Valentine text here! You don' need to sign it! Let's see how romantic you really are!

Beckham is back!

Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Real Madrid – they are all David Beckham’s football clubs. Now David Beckham has a new club – AC Milan!
Beckham plays in America, for a team called LA Galaxy. But he is playing for AC Milan for two months.
LA Galaxy is not a very good team. People in America do not like football very much. Now Beckham is with a good team, in Italy where people love football! How does he feel? He says, “I’m nervous. AC Milan has some very good players”.
Beckham hopes to play for England in the 2010 World Cup. He is 33 now and he says he wants to play football until he is 40 – but in Europe or America?

Who is your favourite football team?
Would you like to live in Europe or America? Why?

Tomorrow will be a historic day for the U.S.A.. Barack Obama will be the first African American President, in a country where the majority of black Americans are descendent of plantation slaves (escravos) and race (raça) is still a open wound (ferida aberta). Barack ("blessed" in Kenyan) is the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas.

The Queen's house

Would you like to live in a house with 600 rooms, 78 bathrooms, a cinema, a swimming pool and a post office?
This is the Queen's London home, Buckingham Palace. The Queen has four other palaces in Britain, but this is her most famous home. If the Queen's flag is flying outside the palace, it means that the Queen is at home. If you are in London between August and October, you can go inside Buckingham Palace. You can see the State dining room, ballroom and the Queen's gallery with all her paintings. But you can't see all of the rooms. The palace is too big!

Present Tenses

This school year you have learnt the Present Simple and the Present Continuous. Now read these sentences about David Beckham and then the explanation and try to understand the difference.

Use the Present Simple to talk about routines and facts. ( He plays football.)

Use the Present Continuous to talk about actions happening now, at the moment. ( He is running.)
